Review: "Chance Encounter" by Lea Coll

Chance Encounter: A Second Chance Harbor Prequel Chance Encounter: A Second Chance Harbor Prequel by Lea Coll
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

"Chance Encounter" is a very short (2 chapter), free prequel to Lea Coll's upcoming release, "Fighting Chance," book #1 of the Second Chance Harbor series. It's a spinoff of the Annapolis Harbor series and features appearances from past characters, but each of the books works as a standalone.

Single mom Savannah St. James runs her mother's gift/clothing store on Main Street in Annapolis, Maryland and lives in the small apartment above the shop with her young son, Miles. The building has recently been sold, and she's worried about the new owner's plans for the building. Will she and Miles be evicted from their apartment? Will the store be forced to move or close down? It's a lot to deal with when her mom is already fighting her on making any changes to the store, which isn't doing well because it's not keeping up with current trends.

Savannah is surprised to learn that the new owner is someone she already knows: Ethan, the boy she tutored in high school. Unfortunately, he's not happy to see her. He claims it's because her store is cluttered and unappealing, which doesn't fit with the other stores on the street and will turn off potential customers for the hardware store he plans to open next door to Savannah's. His attitude seems personal to her, however, and Savannah is determined to figure out why.

Even in such a short introduction, Savannah and Ethan were intriguing characters, and it should be interesting to see where the story goes from here in "Fighting Chance."
