Review: "Entry Level" by Bella Michaels

Entry Level Entry Level by Bella Michaels
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

"Entry Level" by Bella Michaels is part of the multi-author Naughty List series and also ties into the Grado Valley Vineyards series, though it works as a standalone.

Last summer, Owen Smith and Lusanne DeLuca spent one incredible night together while she was visiting the small town of Kitchi Falls for her grandfather's funeral. They secretly dated long-distance for two months afterwards, and it seemed things were going well until she suddenly decided to end the relationship, claiming that there was no future for them because neither had any intention of moving. Her circumstances have changed, however, and Lusanne's back in Kitchi Falls to stay as the new owner of the local bakery. She hopes they can pick up where they left off, but it won't be easy to convince Owen to give her a second chance.

I really enjoyed this sweet yet steamy story. I particularly appreciated that Owen made Lusanne work for his forgiveness because it forced her to be honest with herself as well as him about her fears. Once they'd worked through all of their issues, they ended up being really cute together, and I was rooting for them the whole way.

I'd recommend "Entry Level" for all contemporary romance fans and look forward to picking up Lusanne's brother Gian's book next.

Review: "A Holly Jilly Christmas" by Emma St. Clair

A Holly Jilly Christmas A Holly Jilly Christmas by Emma St. Clair
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

"A Holly Jilly Christmas" by Emma St. Clair is loosely connected to the Love Stories in Sheet Cake (aka Graham Brothers) series but reads as a standalone.

When her family Christmas plans fall through, Jilly Peters decides to make the best of a bad situation by setting off on a last-minute business trip to scout filming locations for her employer, Brightmark Studios. She's convinced that the small, quirky town of Sheet Cake, Texas would be the perfect filming hub for Brightmark's brand of feel-good romance movies and hopes that presenting her find to her boss will win her a promotion. The only problem with Jilly's plan? Her grumpy colleague, Case Winchester, who's decided to invite himself along on her trip. Even though she's secretly had a crush on Case ever since they met, she can't help being suspicious of his motives for accompanying her. Could he be trying to take credit for Jilly's idea? Or is there some other reason that Case wants to spend time with Jilly?

I completely adored this funny, sweet holiday novella. Jilly and Case were both so likeable and relatable, and I loved their witty banter and swoony kisses. I also loved that Jilly used her familiarity with common romance tropes to figure out how to navigate their relationship. Like her, I hate big misunderstandings, so I was especially happy that they managed to avoid that one!

I highly recommend this story for all contemporary/sweet romance and romantic comedy fans and can't wait for the author's next release.

Review: "Christmas At The Grotto" by Colby Bettley

Christmas At The Grotto

Christmas At The Grotto by Colby Bettley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Every year, Christmas-loving Leita looks forward to her seasonal job as an elf at the local Santa's grotto. By contrast, her new co-worker Rhett hates Christmas and couldn't be less excited to play Santa. Putting the two of them together should be a disaster, but when Leita decides that she's going to find a way to make Rhett like Christmas, he's surprised to find himself looking forward to work each day.

I very much enjoyed this cute, funny, and sweet story, particularly its message about the importance of pursuing one's dreams because life is short. Rhett and Leita's banter was a lot of fun and I loved when she teased him. I also loved that he used classic romantic comedies as research material when he was figuring out how to win her over. I will say that a grand gesture seemed kind of unnecessary and over the top in this scenario given that they hadn't parted on bad terms, but it was sweet that Rhett wanted to put in the effort to show Leita how much he cared.

This was a fairly short novella (I read the whole thing in about an hour), so there wasn't time for much in the way of character or relationship development. However, based on the snippets that were shared about Rhett and Leita's respective backgrounds and family situations, I think there's enough material here for the author to expand into a full-length novel if she chose to do so.

I'd recommend "Christmas at the Grotto" for all contemporary romance and romantic comedy fans and look forward to whatever Bettley writes next.

Release Blitz + Review: "The Holly Dates" by Brittainy Cherry

I'm thrilled to take part in today's release blitz celebrating "The Holly Dates" by Brittainy Cherry.

Last Christmas Eve, romance writer Holly Jackson's fiance left her at the altar for her best friend and co-author in front of the entire population of her small Wisconsin hometown. Afterwards, back home in Chicago, Holly launches a solo writing career and vows never to date again, though her resolve is tested as the holidays approach; she's lonely, which is only making her ongoing struggle with writer's block worse. The situation becomes desperate after Holly lies to her brother to avoid a pity setup, claiming that she recently started seeing someone and plans to bring him home for Christmas. She hasn't had much luck with dating apps but figures there has to be at least one decent prospect out there, so she sets up 14 first dates in 14 days at a newly opened restaurant near her apartment. Unfortunately, the restaurant's owner turns out to be Kai Kane, a man who lives in her building and isn't exactly Holly's biggest fan. Kai realizes that the only way to get the woman who's driving him crazy (in more ways than one) out of his restaurant is for her to get a second date, so he decides to help her. He creates a set of dating rules for Holly based on his observations of her behavior, which she agrees to test by continuing her series of first dates with men Kai helps her choose from the app. As he gets to know her better, Kai realizes that he wants to be the only one going out on dates with Holly, but can he convince her that they're a perfect match?

When I started reading this book, I was expecting a typical fluffy holiday rom-com (which would have been fine because I love those!), but it turned out to be so much more than that. While there were plenty of laugh-out-loud funny moments over the course of the story, it was also unexpectedly emotional due to some of the past baggage Kai and Holly needed to work through. They were both a little battered and broken, but together they somehow managed to heal. I adored their witty banter and slow burn chemistry, as well as how cute they were once they got past their initial animosity. If ever two people deserved an HEA, it's Holly and Kai, and I was rooting for them the whole way.

I highly recommend "The Holly Dates" for all contemporary romance and romantic comedy fans. It was the first book I've read by this author but won't be the last.

About "The Holly Dates"

All she wanted for Christmas was a boyfriend for the holidays...
All he wanted was for her to take her crappy first dates elsewhere...

Quirky Holly Jackson was unlucky in love, yet her romantic heart refused to give up her search for companionship—even after her fiancĂ© left her at the altar on Christmas Eve.

Grumpy restaurant owner Kai Kane wanted nothing to do with love after his last relationship. Unfortunately for him, when an eccentric Holly kept entering his restaurant nightly with a different first date, his annoyance grew.

When Kai volunteered to help Holly find a suitor it was for one reason only: to get her out of his restaurant and on to a second date with someone at a different location.

Once Kai became Holly's dating coach, her confidence grew.

It was all going great until Kai became increasingly jealous of the connection Holly developed with another man. The more Holly fell for Kai's pick for her, the more overprotective he became.

Kai quickly realized that all wasn't fair when it came to love and the holidays.

He was going to have to step up his game if he wanted a shot at the ultimate prize—being Holly's favorite date.

*The Holly Dates is a steamy, full-length romantic comedy that will put you right in the holiday spirit.*

Review: "Unexpected Christmas" by Eliza Peake

Unexpected Christmas

Unexpected Christmas by Eliza Peake
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Jake Henderson and Lia Gray had a short but intense romance the summer after they graduated from high school. When it ended, Lia left town for college and has been focused on building her career in advertising ever since. After being passed over for a promotion, however, she decides to come home to Madison Ridge for the holidays. She volunteers to help her mom with the town's annual Christmas festival and is assigned to Santa's workshop, hosted by Jake at his family's auto repair shop. Spending time with her old flame is awkward at first, but it doesn't take long for them to fall back into their old friendship - and more. The problem is that Lia's only in town until Christmas Day, when she's scheduled to return to her life in Seattle. Can Jake give her a reason to stay in Madison Ridge?

I enjoyed this sweet yet steamy story, though there were a few aspects I thought could have been fleshed out a bit more. I would have liked to know more about Jake and Lia's teenage romance, as well as why Lia felt that her parents favored her brother Landon. Also, early in the story it seemed as if Jake and Lia's mothers were trying to play matchmaker for them; unfortunately, that plot thread was dropped after the four of them had breakfast together to make the initial arrangements for Santa's workshop. It's a shame because that could have been a cute addition to the story. At any rate, Jake and Lia had fantastic chemistry and their steamy scenes were absolute fire. I really liked them as a couple and was rooting for them the whole way.

I'd recommend "Unexpected Christmas" for all contemporary/small town romance fans. It was the first book I've read by this author, but it won't be the last.

Review: "Making it Country" by Alexandra Hale

Making it Country

Making it Country by Alexandra Hale
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved Alexandra Hale's debut novel when I read it earlier this year, so to say I was looking forward to reading "Making it Country" might be something of an understatement. It definitely did not disappoint! This book was even better than the first one of the series, and I highly recommend it for all contemporary/small town romance fans.

A decade ago, mechanic Hank Thayer went to prison for a crime he didn't commit. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't seem to escape his past, though the reasons for that were not at all what I expected. Hank was a good guy caught in a tough situation, and he didn't deserve any of what happened to him. I loved seeing him slowly open up to the possibility of a future with the wonderful Isla. She and Hank may have been complete opposites, but they complemented each other in all the ways that mattered. I was rooting for them from the moment they met.

As in the previous book of the series, the secondary characters added a tremendous amount of depth and humor to the story. I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between Hank and his brothers, whose love for each other was clear even when they were bickering or teasing. I also loved Hank's relationship with his sister-in-law Marlee; I laughed so hard when she started throwing the eggs at him!

Overall, I really can't say enough good things about this book. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book in the series!

Review: "Falling for the Grinch" by Amy Alves

Falling for the Grinch

Falling for the Grinch by Amy Alves
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Bakery owner Dani Reed and fire chief Declan Walker have had a strained relationship ever since she asked him out and he very publicly turned her down. A few months later, Dani's been hired to plan the fire department's annual holiday party, but Declan keeps vetoing all of her ideas. She's more convinced than ever that he doesn't like her. The truth is that Declan is very attracted to Dani, but he's uncomfortable with their 14-year age difference and concerned that dating her would create a local scandal. His predecessor lost his job because of an affair, and since being hired a year ago, Declan has worked hard to restore the department's reputation and set a good example for the people who work for him. Meanwhile, motivated by a celebrity's viral video, Dani has decided to put an end to her long dry spell by finding a man who can help her work through a list of fantasies by Christmas. She has the perfect candidate in mind, but a poorly timed power outage leads to an accidental hookup with the wrong man: Declan. It only confirms what Dani has long believed. Declan is the one she wants, but can she convince him that their connection is worth taking a risk?

I really enjoyed this story! Dani and Declan had great chemistry and their banter was a lot of fun. Declan fought his feelings for a little longer than I would have liked, but his concerns were certainly understandable. Even so, I liked that Dani made him work for her forgiveness. It forced him to come up with a hilarious, creative grand gesture that was totally perfect for them as a couple and showed her how much he really cared.

I highly recommend "Falling for the Grinch" for fans of age gap and/or grumpy-sunshine romances and look forward to whatever Amy Alves writes next.
