It Must Have Been the Mistletoe by M.L. Broome
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Penny and Jackson were best friends for three years before finally admitting that they were in love with each other. They were planning their wedding when Jackson, a drummer, got his big break, an international tour as part of superstar Mya's band. The separation was tough on them and it seemed like they were drifting apart, but the final straw was when Penny received a text from Mya confessing that she and Jackson were having an affair. She broke off their engagement, moved to a new town, and changed her phone number. A year later, Penny decides to spend Christmas alone at the lake house she and Jackson bought together so that she can get it ready to sell. She's forced to reconsider her plans when Jackson shows up unexpectedly, determined to set the record straight and win Penny back.
I really enjoyed this story, especially all of the banter between Jackson and Penny. Even after a year apart, there was plenty of chemistry between them, and each was open about the fact that they were still in love with the other. They managed to work through most of their misunderstandings quickly but still had to face the fact that they seemed to want different things at this point in their lives. The main challenge was that Penny was ready to put down roots and start a family, which wouldn't be possible with Jackson if he was constantly on tour as had always been his dream. Sometimes dreams change, however, and Jackson had his work cut out for him to convince Penny that building a family with her was what he really wanted.
I recommend "It Must Have Been the Mistletoe" for all fans of contemporary/holiday romance and plan to check out more of this author's work in the future.
