Blog Tour + Review: "The Bachelor on the Shelf" by Jana Aston

I'm thrilled to take part in the blog tour celebrating "The Bachelor on the Shelf" by Jana Aston, book #6 of the Reindeer Falls series. Like the first three books of the series (released in 2019), this second trilogy is lightly interconnected, but each story works well as a standalone.

Librarian Lexi Foster has been caring for her neighbor's dog, Rudy, since he passed away a few months earlier, and in that time she's come to think of him as her own. Unfortunately, her neighbor actually left the dog to his nephew, professional baseball player Carter Sheppard, who's just showed up in Reindeer Falls to claim him. Carter's not exactly thrilled to be inheriting a "used dog," but he does need to rehab his playboy image if he doesn't want to lose out on a lucrative sponsorship deal, so reconnecting with the apparently sweet and wholesome former high school classmate who's been taking care of Rudy couldn't come at a better time. Lexi doesn't hesitate to turn down Carter's initial proposal of a fake engagement, but when he offers to let her keep Rudy in exchange for her help, she reluctantly agrees to his plan. Forced to spend time "dating" Carter to make their romance seem believable to the press, Lexi finds herself unwillingly attracted to the handsome ballplayer but tries to convince herself that it's nothing more than a leftover high school crush. Could their fake relationship actually turn into something real?

I won't lie - I wasn't a fan of Carter's when I first started reading this book. His comments about his brothers inheriting all of the good stuff from their uncle while he was left with nothing but a "used dog" really made him seem like a selfish jerk. However, when Carter finally explained his "retirement plan" to Lexi and why he was working so hard to get the big sponsorship deal, everything fell into place for me. It became apparent that Carter actually had a pretty big heart and a sincere desire to give back to the community. Between that and his surprising love of YA fantasy novels, he turned out to be a perfect match for Lexi. Her efforts to prove that she wasn't as much of a good girl as Carter thought were so funny; I particularly enjoyed her attempts to update her wardrobe so that she'd look less like a typical librarian, which didn't always work out quite as she planned.

Overall, "The Bachelor on the Shelf" was super cute and funny with the perfect amount of steam, and I highly recommend it for all romantic comedy and holiday romance fans. I can't wait to find out what the author comes up with next.

About "The Bachelor on the Shelf"

My name is Carter Sheppard and I actually like Christmas and my Christmas-themed hometown of Reindeer Falls. In fact, when I learn I have to return home in order to collect an inheritance—my uncle’s dog—it puts life into perspective for me.

Sure, playing professional baseball is great. But it won’t last forever and every player needs a long-term game plan.

And I just found mine. Wrapped up in the feisty, bespectacled package of the town librarian.

Unfortunately, she thinks I’m a player in all aspects of the word, but I’ve got a plan to win her over. Starting with a fake engagement…
